Murdertown, USA: Philly homicides skyrocket

 

Following a rash of weekend shootings, the homicide rate in Philadelphia has soared to roughly a murder a day for 2007. Local officials blame criminals' easy access to guns, a thriving drug trade, and an entrenched culture of witness intimidation.

Ugandan gorillas back in the mist

In the past five years, mountain gorillas — the species made famous by Dian Fossey — have begun to repopulate Uganda after poaching and war nearly killed them off. The mini-boom could benefit the country as tourists pay top dollar to visit the apes.

Mohawk blockade paralyzes Canada railways

In a protest over governmental use of ancestral lands, a Mohawk group snarled train traffic in Ontario, Canada, by blocking tracks with a school bus. Though the incident ended peacefully, the protesters' spokesman said that more disruptions are planned in the area.
