Galapagos ecosystem declared at risk

Citing increases in tourism and poaching, Ecuador declared the Galapagos Islands in ecological danger this week, and announced that it may suspend visitor permits. The volcanic islands, which inspired Darwin's theory of evolution, are home to scores of rare and endangered species.

Lunar real estate going fast

A Nevada businessman wants to sell you the moon — literally. Exploiting a loophole in the 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty, entrepreneur Dennis Hope is selling acres of the moon for $20 each. So far, Hope has pocketed over $9 million.

Google zooms in on Darfur

Partnering with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Google is using its mapping system to draw attention to the genocide in Sudan. Google Earth's "Crisis in Darfur" feature lets users pinpoint burned villages, refugee camps, and other signs of regional upheaval.
